The Canadian services sector has now seen five straight months of contraction, with April’s Business Activity Index coming in at 41.5, according to the latest data from S&P Global. While slightly above March’s near five-year low of 41.2, the index remains well below the 50.0 threshold, which separates expansion from contraction.
This slowdown signals a broader economic cooling. Service providers across Canada are citing weak demand, declining new business volumes, and sustained input cost pressures. In fact, firms reduced their output charges for the first time in over four years as they tried to stay competitive amid eroding margins. Meanwhile, employment in the sector also declined for the fourth consecutive month.
This is not an isolated trend. The S&P Global Canada Composite PMI Output Index, which includes both manufacturing and services, dropped to 41.7, marking the steepest contraction in output since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-2020. The manufacturing sector has not fared much better, with April’s PMI at 45.3, also signaling a significant decline.
So, why choose this story for my first blog post?
Because it captures the intersection of macroeconomic indicators, business confidence, and the evolving post-pandemic economic reality in Canada. It’s timely, it’s data driven and it sets the tone for the kind of content I intend to share here – evidence based insights, reflections on current economic issues, and conversations that matter to educators, students, and professionals in the field of business and economics.
The data behind Canada’s services economy slowdown isn’t just about numbers. It tells us a story about how uncertainty, rising costs, and cautious consumers are reshaping the business landscape. And that’s exactly the kind of analysis this blog hopes to offer more of – clear, objective, and grounded in real economic signals.
Welcome to the conversation.
